At the moment you read this text it will have
been more than 10 years since the first issue of PROJECT RUSSIA was presented in the White Hall at the House of Architects in Moscow. Those who were present probably remember that the first issue arrived from the Slovenian printing house with its covers glued inside-out – in retrospect, only a foretaste of the difficulties we would encounter in the years that followed, including endless production delays, a fire in the editorial offices, and, of course, the ruble crisis of 1998. Notwithstanding these problems – many of which are probably common to any new periodical, – the journal has established itself as the main publication on Russian architecture and design for the professional reader. Still, this is no reason for us to sit back and present you with a retrospective overview of our accomplishments. On the contrary, for us the jubilee has been an incentive to take a critical look at our design and content. We are able to present you with a new PROJECT RUSSIA that reflects a new stage in the development of Russian architecture - its emergence from the ruins of Soviet architecture to participate in international architectural discourse.
Under three headings – body, skin, and content – this issue shows works of architecture that transcend the borders of the regular architectural practice of ‘making good architecture’ and attempt to introduce new materials, forms, and typologies. Since conceptual content is increasingly important, it is no coincidence that a large part of the journal is reserved for projects – a sign that after 10 years our journal’s name is finally beginning to reflect its contents.
